⏱ Second Thought
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 19 August 2026
Second Thought is a browser extension that shows prices as hours of your life, based on a wage you enter yourself.
The short version
Second Thought collects nothing, transmits nothing, and contacts no server. There are no accounts, no analytics, no telemetry, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party services of any kind. Everything you enter stays in your own browser.
What is stored, and where
Second Thought stores the following in browser.storage.local, a private area of
your own browser on your own device:
- The wage details you enter: income amount, pay frequency, hours per week, weeks per year, whether the figure is before or after tax, your marginal tax rate, and — if you choose to fill them in — commute hours, unpaid work hours, and work expenses.
- Your display preferences: which framings to show, the minimum-badge threshold, sales tax percentage, currency symbol, and the assumptions behind the “invested instead” framing.
- The list of sites you have switched Second Thought off for, and whether it is paused.
- Any sites you explicitly report as not working, using the “Report this site” button. Each entry is a hostname, a short reason code, and one line of technical context (for example, “product-shaped page, no price found”). It never includes the page address, the page contents, or anything about your wage.
This data is never sent anywhere. It is not synced between your devices. It is not backed up by the developer. Nobody but you can read it.
What Second Thought does on the pages you visit
To show a badge next to a price, Second Thought reads the content of shopping pages you open. It does this entirely inside your browser, as the page renders. Nothing about the pages you visit — not addresses, not prices, not page content — is stored beyond the current page view or transmitted anywhere.
The extension requests access to all websites because shopping sites cannot be enumerated in advance; a price can appear on any site. That access is used only to find a price on the page in front of you and to place a badge beside it.
Network activity
Second Thought makes no network requests whatsoever. It loads no remote code, no remote fonts, no remote images, and no analytics scripts. This is verifiable: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the extension normally.
If a future version ever includes a link to an external website, following that link is an ordinary navigation that happens because you clicked it — the extension itself still makes no requests of its own.
Sharing and selling
No data is collected, so there is none to share or sell. No data is disclosed to third parties, used for advertising, used to build profiles, used for creditworthiness or lending decisions, or transferred to anyone for any purpose.
Deleting your data
Settings contains a Delete all my data button, which erases everything Second Thought has stored, immediately and permanently. Uninstalling the extension also removes all of its stored data, as the browser deletes local extension storage on uninstall.
Children
Second Thought is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address and the date at the top will be updated. Any change that affected what is stored or transmitted would also appear in the extension’s release notes.
